About the event

Sam Lore is a New York based dancer and Choregrapher, who has performed with artists such as Shen Wei Dance Arts, Andre Miller, Brian Brooks, Dirty Churches, Chein-Ying Wang, and Micayla Wynn.

New York City recording artist Darren Hoffman is a guitarist and co-founder of New Orleans based Uncle Nef, band leader of the NYC trio gorgeous!; founder of Guava Records; creator of Myxstem; and a faculty member of The Florida State University.

Lore and Hoffman will be in residence at The HopBarn from 14th to 19th May 2023 and will present their latest work on Friday 19th May at 7pm.

Their new piece will be an evolution of a collaboration they have been developing since early 2022.

Lore and Hoffman's research process is interested in how minimal production can create a maximal sensory experience through an intentionally narrow scope of production. Their goal is to amplify and multiply connection and presence utilizing sustainable resources.

The dynamic of their work flows between set and scored material as the musician riffs off the movers' choreographic choices. The performance is lit using 6 miniature led lights that will frame an intimate and defined space within The HopBarn performance venue. Thus, within absolute limitations, there is room to play with rhythm, texture and dynamics, as Lore and Hoffman research the vulnerable confines of the stage.

Within these specific boundaries, Lore and Hoffman ask: “How can we make a small space feel large? How does this work feel specific to our current moment in time, our immediate community and the World as a whole?”

Lore and Hoffman are excited about how their collaboration can use a meditative and hypnotic flow while building a stimulating and intimate experience.

Following the performance, which is expected to last about 40 minutes, Sam and Darren would like to invite audience members to a question-and-answer conversation. Refreshments will be served following the performance and before the Q&A Session.
