About the event

A celebration and tribute to Sandy Denny's defining role in British Folk-Rock Music. They have built a substantial reputation with reinterpretations and arrangements of the work of singer-songwriter Sandy Denny. In Sandy’s brief career she left a legacy of beautiful, haunting original and traditional compositions. Richard Thompson called her - The greatest artist of her generation. The band will perform songs from her time with the Strawbs, Fairport Convention and Sandy’s Solo albums. Inspired by Sandy’s work and the wider folk, rock and blues movements of the 60s and 70s. The band will also perform songs from their own Folk Rock Albums 'Lady of the First Light' and 'Wonderland'.

The line-up features musicians with Folk-Rock roots Dik Cadbury from 1970’s Decameron (Bass, Vocals), Mick Candler – Decameron, Roll Movement (Drums), Steve Rezillo (Lead Guitarist), Caley Groves (Acoustic Guitarist), Carol Lee Sampson (Keyboards, Vocals) and Julie July (Vocals).

“Julie July and her band have delivered a first-rate collection of contemporary Folk-Rock music. Quality songs, superb vocals and forthright lyrics delivered with skill, technique and conviction. Perfectly conceived, recorded and superbly realised - this is proof that she is one of the brightest talents in the UK right now” John O’Regan Journalist & Broadcaster - fRoots, Living Tradition, LCCR.

“Went to the gig @ Birmingham last night and really enjoyed the set. Great musicianship and arrangements from the band and Julie’s superb vocal interpretations of Sandy Denny’s songbook really do justice to what is outstanding material. A couple of original songs of their own were also performed and fitted into the set very well indeed. Thanks for an evening of great live music and placing an outstanding musical legacy right where it should be, alive and well and being performed for people to enjoy. A rare opportunity not to be missed!” (Garry)

“It was a great concert!, smashing venue, wonderful sound and beautiful songs. (Showing age…I remember seeing Fotheringay at RFH with the late, great Nick Drake and the Humblebums (Gerry Rafferty and the Big Yin!). The band had a huge sound system, not for volume but for purity of sound. You guys created a great sound at last nights gig!” (Terry)

"Superb band of great musicians. Julie has a voice that really echoes the late Sandy Denny. Go see them if you can, you won't be disappointed. One of the best folk-rock bands around at the moment!" (Stephen)

“Here we have an album of impeccably crafted and performed songs with plenty to say. Delivered by a band of consummate musicians. Every track is a delight, nothing is overplayed or overstated. Every performance is balanced and given in a totally enjoyable manner. The Julie July Band have ploughed their own musical furrow and I love it!” Alan Hewitt – (Journalist - Musicians Corner – TWR)
